Oyun-Erdene Senge is a Mongolian contortionist who has performed with Cirque du Soleil for over 20 years, making her one of the longest-serving contortionists in the company's history. She joined at just 11 years old in 2004 and currently performs in the touring production Alegría — In A New Light.
Oyun-Erdene has been practising contortion since she was six years old. She signed a contract and began training for Cirque du Soleil in Mongolia for 10 months before flying to Montreal at age 11 — her first-ever plane flight — for costume fittings and makeup sessions at the company headquarters.
After three weeks of additional training in Toronto, she performed her first show in September 2004. She has since appeared in four different Cirque du Soleil touring productions.
In 2024, during the London run of Alegría — In A New Light at the Royal Albert Hall, Oyun-Erdene broke a Guinness World Record by performing the most contortion roll push-ups in 30 seconds — achieving 24, surpassing the previous record of 21.
Guinness World Records Adjudicator Megan Bruce commented on the attempt, noting the extraordinary skill involved.
Oyun-Erdene has spoken extensively about what makes Mongolian contortion distinctive:
"Mongolian style of contortion is quite unique because we combine flexibility and strength, as a result we are able to create very strong and beautiful contortion acts."
She emphasises that while many countries practise contortion, the Mongolian approach — rooted in centuries of nomadic culture and formalised through the State Circus system — produces a particular combination of power and grace.
With over two decades of international touring, Oyun-Erdene has performed for more than 3,000 people almost every day, changing cities every two months. She describes herself as a "modern nomad" — connecting her contemporary international life to Mongolia's nomadic heritage.
She has expressed deep pride in representing Mongolia globally:
"I feel so honoured to represent my country all around the world for the last 20 years... I love sharing about my culture and our traditions."
Oyun-Erdene Senge embodies the modern Mongolian contortion tradition:
