Interview with Flexibritt

Performers

Britt, a 14-year-old contortionist from the Netherlands, started her career after receiving messages from contortion trainers who saw her flexibility on Instagram. She trains online with Pixie Le Knot and with her friend Kaylin Paris at home every week.

Hey Britt!, What got your interested in Contortion to begin with?

Hi, my name is Britt, also known as Flexibritt on Instagram. I am 14 years old and I live in the Netherlands. I train online with Pixie Le Knot from London, and I train with my friend Kaylin Paris at home every week. In addition, I dance as a hobby, specializing in urban and modern ballet at a really cool dance school. I am currently in 3rd grade of high school and I perform in different places a few times a year, mostly at parties, carnival, and art show openings.

Many people around me have told me that I should become a contortionist because of my flexibility. At first, I didn't even know what that was (LOL)! I was 10 years old when I started my Instagram account together with my parents. They posted some flexibility photos, and soon enough we received messages from contortion trainers who thought I had talent.

How long have you been performing?

I first performed when I was 3 years old with the Dansmariekes (similar to the Rockettes in the USA). The first time I performed contortion was at my grandmother's wedding last year. Some people were shocked to see it! I also performed with Rhythmic Contortion, which is a mix of rhythmic gymnastics and contortion, but they stopped offering it last year. Now I train with my friend Kaylin Paris.

What or which performance was most memorable to you?

I think the one with Rhythmic Contortion because I performed with my friends. But the act at my grandmothers wedding was also amazing. I can’t choose!

What is the best piece of advice you’ve received in your career?

Never give up, keep going, be patient, practice practice practice….

What advice would you give young people trying to get into contortion?

Find a good coach! Don’t let anyone tell you you are doing something dangerous or weird. They just don’t know contortion.

Do you have a coach currently?

I train online with Pixie Le Knot from London.

What does your daily/weekly training schedule look like?

I dance on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Saturdays. My online contortion training typically falls on Thursdays or Fridays. Each week, I make an effort to train with my friend, Kaylin, though the days vary. I dedicate time to train at home daily, allocating about an hour on weekdays. However, depending on my homework load, some days it might be just 20 minutes. On weekends, I can train for up to three hours.

What is a trick that you’re trying to learn at the moment? How is it going?

I’ve been training for the Ruppelbend forever, it keeps improving but it’s not great yet. That’s my biggest contortion goal. Also  gaining arm strength and balance like Summer and Pixie!

What or who is your biggest inspiration?

There are a few! I’m very inspired by Emerald Gordon Wulf, Pixie le Knot, Contortion Summer and Anna McNulty. They are the best contortionists in the world for me. I watch them a lot on Instagram. Pixie is my online coach and I learn so much from her. I hope I can meet all these wonderful ladies one day. All my contortion friends inspire me too! Especially Luke and Khadia! I've met Emerald and Luke in Amsterdam a few months ago and I can't wait to meet everyone else in person.
