Alexey (Aleksei) Goloborodko (born December 1994, Tula, Russia) is a Russian contortionist widely regarded as one of the most flexible humans alive. He performs with Cirque du Soleil's LUZIA and won the Bronze Clown at the 46th International Circus Festival of Monte-Carlo in 2024 — one of the most prestigious awards in the circus world.
Alexey fell in love with the circus at age four after his parents took him to a show. His natural flexibility was apparent from an extremely young age — his mother tells stories of him startling strangers on buses and shop assistants fitting him with shoes.
He was spotted by his future coach, Vladislav Afanasievich Rodin, at the Circus Circle in Tula. Rodin had 30 years' experience training performers in what he called a synthesis of classical dance, gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, modern dance, martial arts and extreme flexibility. A room in the Goloborodko family's flat was converted into a gymnasium, and Alexey trained for several hours each day.
His training combines:
In 2007, aged 13, Alexey appeared on Minuta Slavy ('A Minute of Fame'), the Russian edition of the Got Talent franchise. He performed 'The Swan', a ballet and contortion routine set to Ave Maria. The show made him a household name throughout Russia.
Alexey joined Cirque du Soleil's LUZIA in April 2016, performing as the character Alebrije — a mythical Mexican creature blending elements of a swan, panther, scorpion and snake. His act is performed amid banks of flickering votive candles, creating a dreamlike atmosphere.
Signature moments include threading his head between his legs while pressing his chest to the floor — poses that audiences describe as seeming to defy the limits of the human body.
Unlike traditional contortion, which tends to be slow and fluid, Alexey's approach integrates multiple movement disciplines into a seamless whole. His dance training gives his contortion choreographic depth, while his martial arts background adds power and dynamism. The result is a style that critics and audiences describe as transcending traditional contortion categories.
Alexey Goloborodko represents the evolution of contortion beyond its traditional boundaries. His work demonstrates that contortion can be:
His Monte-Carlo Bronze Clown in 2024 confirmed his status as one of the foremost contortionists in the world.
